POPPY
Poppy a beautiful 1year old fawn Great Dane bitch, was brought into rescue by Mans Best Friend in late March 2000. The way in which Poppy underwent re-homing was a little unusual. She did not undergo a great deal of training or behaviour modification, which is usually the case with Mans Best Friend rescue dogs.
With Poppy it was more a case of finding the perfect environment. The reason Poppy came into rescue was due to the nervousness, and fear she displayed toward the man of the house in her family. I am sure Poppy was never ill treated by any of her family in any way. This behaviour seemed to be ingrained in her from the previous owners from who she was purchased.
Coupled with this fear she would also run off if she got the opportunity. After complaints from local residents about her roaming free and rummaging through their bins, the decision was made to re-home her.
Early in April 2000 an ideal situation came up for her with Sandra and Michael Betts. Already the owners of a Great Dane and several other dogs they are extremely experienced dog owners. The regime in the Betts household is one were the dogs have free reign of the property which has extensive fenced in outdoor areas.
It was felt that Poppy who is very sociable with other dogs would benefit from these large secure outdoor spaces. That she would follow the lead of the rest of the familys dogs and accept Michael with out any fear. This was exactly what happened. By the afternoon of her first day in her new home she was curled up fast asleep next to Michael on the sofa.
She is now a happy and secure member of her rather large new family and as ever we wish them all a long and happy life together.
