Holly
16th June 1989 - 11th March 1990

Holly was our first German Shepherd.  When I went to see the breeder, with some trepidation, having heard about the reputation that the breed had for aggression and size of dog.  I learnt the well kept secret, that infact they are mostly such soft dogs.  Holly was such a brave spirited, happy little 'tyke'. She was never a problem with people or other dogs after her first training class, when she barked so much that she started all the others off.  We felt it kinder not to persevere, and were lucky that this seemed to cause no problem with the obedience training we tried to give her.  Her greatest joy was to lie in her bed in the kitchen of an evening, listening to discussions about her exploits, listening to the words 'Holly' and 'good girl' being said. The tail thumping was deafening.

She had such character, a real 'joir de vivre' spirit that was with us for such a short time.  The vet we had then recommended that she was spayed after her first season, this was done on the Friday, she seemed a bit groggy and wobbly on Saturday and we found her dead on Sunday morning.  The vet said she had a blood clotting disorder, she died from post-operative internal haemorrhaging.
